The Bully Project film is a new feature-length documentary that follows "a year in the life" of America's bullying crisis, and offers an intimate look at how bullying has touched the lives of five kids and their families.

About the Film


SYNOPSIS

Directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, The Bully Project is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. The Bully Project follows five kids and families over the course of a school year. Stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals’ offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children. As teachers, administrators, kids and parents struggle to find answers, The Bully Project examines the dire consequences of bullying through the testimony of strong and courageous youth. Through the power of their stories, the film aims to be a catalyst for change in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children and society as a whole.

By Gayle Crabtree Could someone please tell me what an alleged reporter was thinking when he wrote the piece called Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town . In this article, the NY Times reporter James C. McKinley, JR writes about how the rape of an 11 year old is reverberating through a town. What he doesn’t write about is how the rape is reverberating through the child’s life and the life of her family. Beginning with the title, the article takes the fast track downhill. You bet the town is shaken. It should be. The reported gang rape of an 11 year old should shake any town to the core! Rape should never be condoned. Further, there is no excuse for an article to even suggest that a child (or adult) is to blame. The problem is that the tone of this article seems to side with the alleged perpetrators. (I say alleged because everyone is innocent until proven guilty under the law.) I’d like to know who told the reporter that it’s ok to quote comments about the way a child dresses. In the ar...

The Nature of Things

I recently read an excellent book called the Last Child In The Woods , authored by Richard Louv.  It is a scholarly written book and discusses how we are raising a generation of children who spend little to no time in the woods, thus suffering from what Mr. Louv describes as a "nature deficit disorder" . Listen to this short video in which Mr. Louv shares his findings: I think back to my own youth, remembering the 1,000's of hours spent exploring in the woods, climbing trees, looking for insects, playing in streams, getting muddy and wet and getting lots of healthy exercise.   The below document is a proposed anti-bullying statue that states can use to as a guideline for anti-bullying legislation.  It was provided by The Bully Project.
