Do You Know What's In Your Food?

Do you know what's in your food? Well, you really should start paying attention!

Why?

Most of our food supply is handled by a small number of mega corporations that are developing practices to insure mega profits instead of quality food. And much of this comes at the expense of the animals in how they live prior to slaughter.

For example, did you know the E-coli scare with hamburger, is really due to cattle being fed corn products instead of natural plants? The corn is cheaper. Our US government subsidizes corn, and most of the big farms are mandated to use it for feed. However, cows don't naturally eat corn products and their body reacts to it by producing this super strain of E-coli. And because the cows are penned in very tightly, with little room for movement, they basically stand in their excrement all day long, where the E-coli bacteria thrive. Prior to butchering the cattle, they get "dipped" but it's almost impossible to kill all the bacteria, so eventually it ends up in our hamburger meat.

Instead of allowing the cows to roam and eat natural plant food, which would eliminate the problem almost immediately, the manufacturers soak the hamburger meat in Ammonia, which tends to kill most of the bacteria, but unfortunately, not all. There have been a number of deaths in the US related to E-coli.

In addition, the cows are being given growth hormones, which basically speeds up the timeline for when the cattle are ready to be slaughtered. And because they are packed in so tight, the cattle get cut and nicked up all the time, so they are constantly injected with antibiotics.

So, by the time you are ready to purchase that hamburger at your favorite fast food place, that beef has been tainted with growth hormones, antibiotics, E-coli and Ammonia.

I don't know about you, but this makes me mad and I now do everything I can to NOT eat hamburgers anymore!  In fact, there really is a strong argument to go vegetarian, but that's another challenge.

Here is the trailer for a powerful documentary, called Food Inc. which I believe does an excellent job showing us what is going on in the food industry and why are government is failing to regulate our industry (can you say lobbyist?) the way it needs to!

How To Talk To Kids About Leiby Kletzky

10 Tips Parents Need to Know By Dr. Robyn Silverman A horrific story about a 8 year old boy, Leiby Kletzky, gone missing, murdered and dismembered in Brooklyn this week, has parents wondering how to talk to their children about this tragedy. As a parent myself, all I wanted to do was shut my eyes, close my doors, and hold my children tight. It is every parent’s nightmare—not just because of the loss itself—not just because of the gruesome way this young boy died—but because of the senselessness of the murder. What was the motive? Why this boy? Or perhaps more accurately, could it have just as easily been mine? As a mother I find it so hard to write this article. My stomach flips and my teeth chatter just like yours. We want to raise happy, healthy, confident children—not ones that hide from the world and fear those within it. At the same time, these kinds of sickening stories make us want to yell; “stay home with me and never venture out alone!” Logically, we know ...

Mimimizing Rape: Who is Responsible!

By Gayle Crabtree Could someone please tell me what an alleged reporter was thinking when he wrote the piece called Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town . In this article, the NY Times reporter James C. McKinley, JR writes about how the rape of an 11 year old is reverberating through a town. What he doesn’t write about is how the rape is reverberating through the child’s life and the life of her family. Beginning with the title, the article takes the fast track downhill. You bet the town is shaken. It should be. The reported gang rape of an 11 year old should shake any town to the core! Rape should never be condoned. Further, there is no excuse for an article to even suggest that a child (or adult) is to blame. The problem is that the tone of this article seems to side with the alleged perpetrators. (I say alleged because everyone is innocent until proven guilty under the law.) I’d like to know who told the reporter that it’s ok to quote comments about the way a child dresses. In the ar...
