Remembering Memorial Day!

I found this really beautiful video from Humanity Healing, that helps us remember the significance of what Memorial Day is all about. I have several military families that train with me, and several members that have been deployed over the past three years. Thankfully, no one I know personally has been wounded or killed.

However, we are engaged in two wars and the reality is we have men and women who continue to be in harms way.

Let's say a prayer for the fallen, and those still serving on the front lines!

Thank you to all who serve and those that gave their lives to protect our freedom!

Happy Memorial Day!

How To Talk To Kids About Leiby Kletzky

10 Tips Parents Need to Know By Dr. Robyn Silverman A horrific story about a 8 year old boy, Leiby Kletzky, gone missing, murdered and dismembered in Brooklyn this week, has parents wondering how to talk to their children about this tragedy. As a parent myself, all I wanted to do was shut my eyes, close my doors, and hold my children tight. It is every parent’s nightmare—not just because of the loss itself—not just because of the gruesome way this young boy died—but because of the senselessness of the murder. What was the motive? Why this boy? Or perhaps more accurately, could it have just as easily been mine? As a mother I find it so hard to write this article. My stomach flips and my teeth chatter just like yours. We want to raise happy, healthy, confident children—not ones that hide from the world and fear those within it. At the same time, these kinds of sickening stories make us want to yell; “stay home with me and never venture out alone!” Logically, we know ...

The Nature of Things

I recently read an excellent book called the Last Child In The Woods , authored by Richard Louv.  It is a scholarly written book and discusses how we are raising a generation of children who spend little to no time in the woods, thus suffering from what Mr. Louv describes as a "nature deficit disorder" . Listen to this short video in which Mr. Louv shares his findings: I think back to my own youth, remembering the 1,000's of hours spent exploring in the woods, climbing trees, looking for insects, playing in streams, getting muddy and wet and getting lots of healthy exercise. Fast forward 30 years -- and today's kids spend nearly all of their time indoors -- some because of over-anxious parents worried their child will be abducted, and others, simply because children have video games, DVD movies, and that "drug with a plug" called the television.  We are raising a generation of "couch potatoes"! At Samurai Karate Studio , we have incorporated enviro...

Dietary Self Defense -- Includes The Humane Treatment of Animals

What does dietary self defense have to do with karate? Well, everything! If you attend any of my self defense workshops, you know one of the things I preach about self defense, is having a fit body, that relies on healthy food to fuel it. While it certainly would be nice for everyone to be "model" thin, the reality is we are not, but that doesn't mean we can't work on our fitness and be conscious of what we eat. As per of my instructor training with the UBBT, dietary self defense is a big part of our test. And not just the types of food we eat, but where it comes from and how it is produced. Like many of you, I never really gave much thought to where our food came from; I just bought my groceries at the local supermarket like everyone else. But, because of my UBBT training, I have started to take a serious look at our food supply and I am not liking what I see. For example, here is a video from the Humane Society that calls attention to how pigs are ra...
